Owls, February 27th

upstreamforestschool

The Owls had a great field trip to Big Hill Springs. This class is learning how to travel well together and adapt to new environments with respect and excitement.

The morning started tromping through the snow in a game of Eagle Nest. The wet snow surprised us all. This lead to some good discussions around preparedness, the unexpected and cold feet.

Along the north loop of the hike the Owls slugged through deep and sticky mud...again another element that lead us to contemplate how we were dressed. We arrived at the top out of breath and ready for a snack so we settled on an outcrop of rock with a spectacular view of the valley. This spot combined with the wind captivated the Owls and inspired them into playing a game of wizardry and invoking the elements.

Heading down and into the south loop of the hike the Owls found a hidden spot along the creek with large tuffa boulders, crevices to explore and a winding spring to build bridges over. We settled here for lunch and exploration. The Owls worked together to build a bridge. They made bases. They fished and raced fir cones and they found spaces for themselves to sit and listen to the flowing water.

Although we didn't manage to complete the south loop the Owls it seemed that the Owls were enriched by simply and completly being in the nature that surrounded them.

To wrap up the day we made boats out of loose parts and sent them down the many different currents found in the springs at the beginning of the trail head.

Thank you to all the parents for accomodating our field trips. They are so valuable!
