Foxes, February 11th

upstreamforestschool

The Foxes had a great day of games, play, storytelling and taking leadership with the Rabbits when they came for a visit.

The day started with an introduction to Mrs. Heidi who was subbing for Mrs. Lea today. As always the Foxes were very welcoming. Once we got to our spot the Foxes eagerly tried on snowshoes for a game of Rabbit Hole. As it was not ideal snowshoe weather the Foxes had a taste of how hard it can be to maneuver in snowshoes. Ask your Fox what the game Rabbit Hole was shaped into. It comes naturally to the Foxes to change a game and as a class level it up. This takes great communication skills, which always impresses the teachers.

After a stealthy game of Eagle Egg the Foxes met up with the Rabbits to make an outside playground. The Foxes divided themselves to set up the slack line, a swing and a trapeze. This led into free play with the Rabbits. Sword play developed while others made the most out of the swings and slack line. All the teachers were so impressed with how the Foxes organized the Rabbits to safely play on the swings and slack line. It was lovely to see their leadership skills emerge while helping younger children.

After lunch the we headed to the climbing tree. While the regular tree was climbed numerous times, the Foxes branched out to some other more challenging trees in the area.

Letting the Rabbits take the lead we played a large game of Coyote Mouse on the skating rink, which was slightly snowed over so a little grippy. Again the Foxes fine tuned the game to challenge themselves and utilize the entire skating rink. We watched as the Foxes took elements of other games we played in the past to create an engaging and physically challenging game. Ask your Fox the rules.

This led into imaginary play amongst Talia, Julien (we are so happy to have her back) and Maizy. It was lovely to see their friendships evolve through their play.

Meanwhile the rest of the Foxes set out to make a fire using only what they had in their backpacks and no help from the teachers. It was a struggle, but they worked together and finally managed to get a fire going. More and more the Foxes are demonstrating their evolving teamwork and survival skills. Perhaps a survival challenge is in their future.
